Paladin for Exposed Pipes in Cold Areas
Plumbing that is exposed underneath raised homes & cottages and or in non-heated basements and crawlspaces can be a headache when the temperature outside dips...
We’re often asked if it’s OK to freeze protect the hose and the frost-free hose bib that sits on the outside of a building.
All Heat-Line heating cable systems are self-regulating, meaning they adjust their heat output based on the surrounding temperature to help prevent overheating. This feature makes them safe for use on non-metallic materials such as hoses. In contrast, typical constant wattage heat tape from hardware stores cannot be used on hoses, as it lacks self-regulation and may overheat—potentially melting both the cable and the hose.
Heat-Line self-regulating systems are safe for most hose materials and can be safely overlapped to protect hose bibs. (Some hose materials may not be compatible with heat exposure; contact Heat-Line customer support for guidance.) However, there are additional considerations when it comes to frost-free hose bibs.
In this month’s video, we take a closer look at:
• How frost-free hose bibs are meant to work
• Why they can still freeze
• What happens when freezing occurs at the bib
• What we recommend for long-term reliability
If you’re considering freeze protection for your hose and hose bib system, understanding this detail could help you avoid a costly repair.
