Drain-back Systems and the Importance of Freeze Protection

When water supply comes from a well or lake, some homeowners use a drain-back system for freeze protection. This system allows water to drain from the pipe when the pump shuts off, preventing freezing as there is no water left inside. However, if any part of the system fails and the pipe freezes, it can cause significant issues, especially in very cold weather.

Heat-Line offers innovative freeze protection solutions that eliminate the need for drain-back systems. However, if a drain-back system is used, additional freeze protection is recommended to prevent unexpected freeze ups should the system fail. The Retro-Line in-pipe heating cable system stands out because it can safely operate in dry pipes, such as those found in drain-back systems. Other outdated heating cable technologies require the pipe to be filled with water to prevent overheating, rendering them unsuitable for drain-back systems.
